Engineering

Engineering is able to offer design and professional services associated with water, wastewater, reclamation and industrial treatment plants and networks. It undertakes studies to assess the ‘needs for investment’, feasibility, outline and detailed design, commissioning and operation (optimisation) at both business strategic, programme and project levels.

With an emphasis on affordability, Farrer's Engineering prides itself on generating cost-effective environmental solutions that satisfies the end client and other key stakeholders, such as planning authorities, landowners, public and statutory undertakers. Farrer has an integrated, multi-disciplined design team that includes process, civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and commissioning expertise.

Farrer's Scientific Services and Process Design team source, collect and analyse the necessary influent data by undertaking, for example, Flow and Load studies utilising our suite of mobile and office based laboratories and equipment. Mass Balance calculations, backed by treatability studies, allow the optimum process to be selected with, if on an existing site, an impact assessment on the existing process. The company's commissioning and operational knowledge is integrated into the design from the outset whilst developing the process control philosophy, hydraulic and pump design, valve, instrument, pump schedules and commissioning plans.

Site localities and layouts are considered with functionality, safety and the environment in mind. The structural design team advise and interpret these along with the materials, ground conditions, existing structures and utilities to arrange, sequence and describe how the structures are designed by minimising the residual risk to the construction team. Designers are Construction Design Management Regulations (2007) trained. Farrer has full capability in reinforced concrete, steelwork, brickwork and metalwork design supported by a full draughting capability.

Farrer mechanical engineers configure and specify the mechanical plant exploring fabrication, materials and product alternatives. Product and design selection assesses the availability, reliability and maintainability of the equipment in line with the needs of the client. To improve the visualisation of the proposed design to the end user and key stakeholders, such as the planning authority, Farrer utilise 3-D draughting that integrates into our intelligent Process and Instrumentation diagrams.

Electrical and Software engineers at Farrer are able to offer a full Electrical, Instrument, Control and Automation (EICA) design service.  The in-house Electrical design skills include HV primary substation design, site power distribution, embedded generation, MCC design and field cabling systems. In-house Instrumentation, Control and Automation (ICA) engineers develop software and control solutions for a wide range of PLC and SCADA platforms. Working with new and legacy systems Farrer provide energy efficient control and monitoring systems.  Site inspections for harmonic disturbance and energy usage allow Farrer to offer cost effective solutions for the reduction of client operating costs.

The team of commissioning engineers will set plants to work, provide training and the necessary documentation to aid the clients’ operators to take over and run the plants.
