The survey area incorporated the drainage infrastructure running from outside the Royal Oak public house on Cross Green, along Fowke Street to the discharge point into the Rothley Brook. This also included a connecting drainage section from School Street.
The contract comprised GPS (Global Positioning System) surveys to accurately locate assets for mapping and CCTV surveys to establish the condition of the asset through visual appraisal, with jetting services as required, to clear the drains. The survey area is shown in Fig.1.
Key elements of this investigation survey included chamber assessment, collecting information on manhole cover size, chamber access, size, construction and pipe information, and asset condition survey using CCTV.
The survey identified a total of 59 point items, including phantom nodes, gullies, manholes, connection nodes, culverts and outfalls as well as linear items within the network; pipework, which included foul water drains (though only surface water features were surveyed).
All data was recorded in accordance with Highways Agency HD43/04 standards, for which Farrer is a recognised and specialist supplier, and was inclusive of AutoCAD drawings detailing asset locations and CCTV survey findings.
The benefits of such a survey include pin-point knowledge of the location of buried drainage assets, understanding of the condition of these assets to prioritise CAPEX/OPEX as well as performance data crucial to understanding how assets manage during different weather events.
Farrer has subsequently been invited to participate in further work in the region
